Two weeks in Santiago
We hit the market just before closing time on a Saturday. The difference between this market and other markets I’ve seen around the world is what hides behind the vegetables. In a few stalls behind the brocoli, the cauliflower and the onions were newspaper clippings and posters of the shop-keepers’ favorite football teams, photographs of the players with their trophee and somewhere in between maybe a picture or two of the shop-keepers’ family.
Chile had recently qualified for the 2010 soccer world cup by beating Colombia. There were banners and flags praising the team for their achievement. The vegetables are mere decoration.
